1) Love God.
2) Love others.
Those are the two commands Jesus gives us. What does love have to do with anything? It’s what makes the world go round. Today’s culture has traded the true meaning of love for a lesser meaning of lust. But true Love is self-sacrificing.
Giving up a week of vacation to move a daughter into her first home is love, my friends. Painting and cleaning a house that hasn’t been lived in in over a year, more love. As I get older, I tend to love to stick to my routines. But give me some coffee when I wake up and I’m good to go.
This past week has been stressful and tiring, to say the least. Driving in unfamiliar territory, listening to GPS telling me to go one way, me going another. I only have to go 6 miles from point A to point B and I can’t figure it out. Not only that but I’m supposed to be leading my husband who was driving the 15 foot U-Haul to its drop off destination.
I am not good at looking at my phone while driving with Google Maps. I’m more of a landmark kinda person. I missed a turn, not once but TWICE. Finally, I pulled over, a nervous wreck, and my husband was such a gentleman. He didn’t get mad at me. Instead, he took charge and took the reins. He took my phone and said, “Not to worry. Follow me, I can get us there.
That’s love. (Now, if that had been at the beginning of the move, with the truck full of household furnishings after 4 hours of driving, that might have been a different story. But I am very thankful for a spouse who is loving.
How much does Jesus do the same for us on a daily basis? Do you know that He loves you like that? Do you just give your anxieties and worries to Him when you are losing it? He will willingly take them. He is always there for us. We just have to give it to Him. He showed up for me. He will do it for you. Yes, Jesus uses other people to help us in times of need.
Jesus laid down His life for His friends. That’s love. He calls us to do the same: to lay down our lives not just for Him but for our neighbors as well. Who are you willing to lay down your life for? Your family? Probably. Your next door neighbor? What can you do today to show love?
God bless.—Barb
