You’re An Original!

This week we are covering the character trait of originality. This will be one for the books. Did you know, you’re an original? No two fingerprints are the same. –Amazing!

You be you and I’ll be me ’cause we’re both different as can be. God made you and He made me… in His image. (Yes, this is my attempt at Dr. Seuss rhyming. I am not good at writing like Dr. Seuss.)

But I am a fan of MEtv, only because they carry old shows, back when there was something good to watch on television, and it has inspired me to write about originality.

I was watching an episode of Adam 12 yesterday, where this older gentleman had called the police to have them write a ticket for some “hippie’s” van that was illegally parked in front of his building. He was going on about how these “hippies just weren’t like the rest of us”. Officer Malloy said it would be a pretty boring world if we were all created the same. (I hope they won’t cancel these shows for being insensitive to hippies.) These shows were filmed in the 60’s and 70’s.

We haven’t changed much, have we? Still dealing with the same issues: hippies. lol. –Not really. But we still have issues with people who are different from us and accepting that over the years, times and cultures were different, too. (I’ll save the cancel culture issue another blog.)

No two people are created exactly the same. They may look alike as in the case of twins, but even twins are not exactly alike. Each person’s DNA is different. God is amazing like that. Imagine if you will, over 7.9 billion people in the world (according to Worldometer), and there is no one exactly like you! Celebrate that!

How Original Are You?

So why do we try so hard to be like everyone else, to keep up with the Jones’s? Why do we compare ourselves to others? I think it’s only natural to want what others have. We see something we like in someone else, someone we admire, so we try to be like them or look like them. That’s ok, to a point, if it helps us to be a better person. If we like their haircut or want to be a good leader like our neighbor, that’s good. It’s when, we start trying to change our DNA and play God, I think, or we look down on someone because they aren’t like us, that we take it too far. But that’s only my opinion. You don’t have to agree with me. That’s what’s unique about all of us, too: We’re allowed to have differing opinions!

Your Call to Action

So who are you? Who do want to be? Are you an original or a copy of someone else? I am me. There’s a whole lot to who I have become over the years. Every day I wake up, I add to who I am. I love God. I am a woman, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a writer. It’s who God created me to be. I don’t want to change it, nor do I need to. I want to make the best of it. How about you?

You’re an original. There’s no one else like you. Make a list of all your great qualities, of everything that makes you, you. Celebrate them! Let’s teach our children and grandchildren to do the same. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. You be you. –Wonderfully made. But you be you in love, not hate. Let’s love others because we are all originally loved by God, our Father.

God bless.–Barb
