Taking the Road Less Traveled

It’s the beginning of Advent. A time of taking the road less traveled in preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ. For some, it can also be a time of stress and anxiety. Over the next few weeks, let’s take some time away from the hustle and bustle of this busy season and just connect with silence and God. Let’s find a little peace.

Peace

Taking the road less traveled is peaceful. It’s kinda like driving. That back road you take to get from point A to point B. –Not everybody is on it. You don’t have to drive like a maniac. There is no rush-hour traffic. You have time to enjoy your surroundings and calmly get where you need to go. There is peace in the silence when you can quiet your mind and slow down time for just a bit.

Silence

Take some time everyday to just sit in silence. Start small. 15 minutes to half an hour. Get up before anyone else in the house, (even if it’s 4:30 am) so there are no distractions. Have your cup of coffee and maybe a notepad with you and just sit with your eyes closed. Ask God to bring to mind people who need to be prayed for, situations that need to be resolved, or just talk to him about whatever is on your mind and then….listen.

I’ve been waking up without an alarm now for few years- at least as long as I’ve been writing this blog. It’s amazing what God has been able to do in the silence: how He has been leading me, encouraging me and showing me how to grow in my faith and life.

Getting Started

I would encourage you all to find a small amount of time each day at the beginning or the end to help you to grow in prayer and sanctity. Schedule it your calendar or planner. Set an alarm or put a reminder on your phone. You have to make the time if you want things to change. Don’t let the busyness and craziness of life steal your joy and peace.

Try this for 30 days and see if it doesn’t work for you. Last night, we tried to get one of the grandkids to eat her sandwich at dinner. She didn’t even want to try it. She was sure she didn’t like it. We made a little game of it and she took a small bite. Her eyes lit up when she realized she liked it! 2 minutes later, the sandwich was gone and she was rewarded with grapes. Try the silence. Get your grapes.

Thanks for following along. Prayers for a peace-filled Advent for you, friends.

God bless.–Barb
